Herzog, Yitzhak ha-Levi

(1888-1959)
   Israeli rabbinic scholar. He was born in Poland and was taken by his family to Leeds, England, when he was nine. He served as a rabbi in Belfast (1916-19), and Dublin (1919-36), where he was chief rabbi of the Irish Free State. He became chief rabbi of Palestine in 1937. During World War II he attempted to rescue Jews from persecution in Europe, and after the war he travelled throughout Europe to find orphaned Jewish children. He published studies of the institutions of Jewish law and the Talmud as well as responsa.
